Juan-
Low mositure ( shringage)quick dry are keys. Also check for transference/bleeding if blues or reds. I'm sure you do that anyway just wanted to remind you. I have used even the suds from encap cleaners and sponge but like using steam. If its a white piece and you have Hydrox from Excellent Supply that works good on possible browning prevention.
On your uph. machine might want to consider just rasing the tool and misting then extracting, all depends on type of tool your using.

You said you use a small portable hwe machine. Get some upholstery shampoo and a horse hair brush. You can put the shampoo in a spray bottle or in a pail. Shampoo up the bad areas like the seat cushions and arms and then rinse with your hand tool. The rest of the areas you dont shampoo just give them a quick go over.

All Good advice above. I like Masterblend's Upholstery Shampoo on white sofas. It really makes the white pop.
Make sure you wet the sofa evenly to avoid wet staining...and dry as quickly as possible. We use small fans on the cushions and placed on the deck of the sofa to dry the back and arms.

So the shampoo 'whipped into a foam' and applied with a sea sponge is as useless as it seems?

(Trying that right now on my 40 year old cotton couch) disappointed  :(

Did you pre-vac?

What kind of shampoo did you use?

Did you extract it if it was regular shampoo?

Did you brown it out, never to see the white again?

Or did you use a dry brittle encap shampoo?

If so, you can let it dry and then vacuum the encapped dirts away.

Remember the part about how some fabrics look dark while they are wet, and really brighten up when they dry?

Details. Give us details.....

Were you wearing gloves?

It's gonna be real stiff when the LM tool gets there....

The sofa, Okay?

P.S. - If it was Haitian Cotton, you would see little seeds in the material. Being that old, it might be a mixture of cotton and silk...did you do a fiber burn test?

P.P.S. - This is NOT the correct way to do a fiber burn test -

No.

I did a 'Mom! what kinda couch is this?' test.

It does have a silk/cotton look to it.

My 'class' is tuesday.
