Portable camp stove
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:19:53 AM »
Mike I know you camp, have you ever made one of the penny stoves? I had some extra time and decided I would make one for this summer, first 2 couldn't get to work right. The last one rocks just made some changes to the design and now it looks like a gas stove burner. ran a flame for about 20 minutes on 3 oz denatured alcohol. I found out the secret is to heat the unit up under neath to make a gas vapor to push it through the holes/jets then your good to go. I just set the whole thing in a tuna can and add very little denatured in the bottom light it and let it burn and then light the stove the little I put in the can burns off and in the mean time the stoves a runin. I can make a stove in about 15 minutes now and only cost 2 cans

Jeff - I can say I've never done that.

I own a portable propane stove, Coleman, and I have a propane stove in the camper.  :)

1) 2 clean rinsed out empty pop or beer cans
2) score a line about 1.5"- 2" from bottom, cut with tins snips or kitchen shears
3) take one can bottom  and along the top add holes about 8 along the rim and 4 or 5 in the middle use a push pin style thumb tack for the holes
4) with same can facing up (holes you just made facing up)about 1/4" down the side in painted area not polished make 6-8 push pin holes around perimeter this will help gases move as heats up.
5) Now use your finger and crimp just under the side holes slightly this will help the cans fit together.
6) Now put one can inside the other carefully when done both bottoms should be facing out.
7) fill the stove with denarured alcohol
8) set the stove in a small can add a little denatured in the base of the can the stove is in just enough to burn for about 1 minute to heat the stove and create gas build up
9) after about 1 minute light the jet holes the prefule should have burned out by now or soon and just the jets will be burns HOT blue flames

ran a flame for about 20 minutes on 3 oz denatured alcohol.

Wow that's a pretty sweet rig! Is that a fairly average run time for 3 oz?
