Upgrades
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:41:50 PM »
I'm going to be upgrading to the latest released version of our forum software to fix some security issues.

Will also be upgrading our advertising mod. It will also allow users to buy ad space here on the site.

There are bound to be issues as I work through the upgrade. We have a lot of modifications now and each one usually needs to be tweaked.  :banghead:

Sorry in advance for any inconvenience.

Most of them are behind the scenes .........bug fixes.

Only new function will be the ability to buy advertising.

Looks like this will be a looooooooong process.

Still working on it..............this will take a while.

Seems like every time I upgrade the software it gets harder and harder to do.

That is one of the issues they reported to have worked on in this upgrade. Also some security issues. I know from experience that if there is a way for someone to get into your system they will. Also fixes a list of bugs as long as your arm. .............one of them was something about "show unread posts since last visit" which some of you have had problems with. Evidently it was a known bug.

I'm going to just keep picking away at this. Was at it all day yesterday until 1:30 AM. Internet was getting slower and slower all day until I lost it at 1:30. Hard to get this kind of stuff done when internet connections are slow to non existent.

Expect more error codes today.  :-[

I've mentioned before that this board is like the College of Cleaning for me. That makes mike the dean, provost, facilities engineer, registrar, academic coordinator...... And I just come to class. Thanks for all you do Mike.

Also Mike,

There is a guy that frequents this board via his cell phone. He has been calling me for what seems almost a year now getting himself prepared to start his business after he retires from Ford. He just told me yesterday how much this board has helped him and how the caliber of people and information is to great here compared to other boards.
Anyways, keep up the good work and thanks for taking all of Phils crap. I dont know if I could do it. Now Eric on the other hand. I can deal with him.

  :great:

Thanks for the encouragement.

I'm making some progress.........Just got the sitemap working again and fixed a few bugs. Still getting piles of error codes behind the scenes and its possible some features may not be working.

Just going to keep picking away.

Did see a post on a webmaster forum about this software and how some of the contributors are battling about structure including ease of upgrading. Looks like it might get easier to do upgrades..........down the road sometime. The problem with it now is every time the core software is upgraded all the mods have to be reinstalled or adjusted to work. We have a lot of mods so its very time consuming. Interestingly another piece of web software I'm using for another site is using structure like they describe for this forum software. Looks complicated at first but upgrades to the core don't affect mods.  ;D Overall its been a learning experience for me. Having to learn some new skills during this whole procedure. Coding reminds me of accounting. You have to be very methodical and accurate. One wrong piece somewhere throws the whole thing off and you have to go through it all to find the error.  :-[

I could have put the forum in maintenance mode but I figured you could work through the occasional error code?

Thanks!
