Manual Approval
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:14:14 AM »
Sorry but I need to implement manual member approval for a while.

It seems we have humans registering as members then posting advertisements. The software we have in place catches the bots pretty well but a human that answers all the questions correctly can still register. This is a known problem for many forums these days. Someone pays a few bucks to people to register and post stuff.

black hat seo  :banghead:

you might as well just join a forum that you like, and actually participate. you still get your links, and you might have fun, get to know people, and learn something.

They ARE spammers. Posted links to sites and everything.

Software helps with the bots but doesn't do a thing for humans that are intent on registering. Some of these people are paid professionals.

Google did pick up two before I got them deleted. That's why these guys post on forums.

I attempted open registration last night after upgrading the site software and adding an additional anti spam mod.

Signed on this morning to see a new "member" and porn posts.  :41:

Registration is back on manual.

That didn't take long..........bagged one within a half hour. Guess I will need to leave this on manual long term.

Every time we implement new things they figure a way around them.

Let the search engine optimizers join. I think they have clicking on my search results to get my contact information and pushed my results to the 1st page of Google and didn't cost me a cent.  :great:

Most of these bots are either harvesters or spammers.

Mike,

Manual approval is the only way to go. I have used it for years and I have caught a lot of 'back-door spammers'. These sneaky individuals set up multiple memberships so that they can have fake conversations with themselves in order to slip in links in the guise of helping another member. Others used multiple personalities to start arguments with themselves an cause disruption to the normal harmony of the forum.

Speaking of spammers. Craigslist is the largest owner of spamming software and development.
How else gp you think they get paid??

Also companies like direct tv, us bank and others. Sell your private info to solicitation companies, and debt collection companies..

I signed with direct tv a month ago. And some creditor collections agency mails me a demand of payments, has my cell number my addy. It was for a cell bill from 9 years ago. LOL
