new recoil set up
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:39:20 PM »
Here's a few photo's of my van with recoil. I still need to get a hose reel. Hopefully I can squeeze it between the recoil & little giant heater. And I plan to place a fresh water tank behind the recoil, then run auto dump.

Nice Andy

It doesn't look like the hose reel will fit between the recoil and the 2HT.

I would buy a flat tank for waste water and put on the side door of the Van, build something to encase the tank and put the recoil and Hose Reel on top the enclosure of the tank. You can use gravity to fill the waste tank from Recoil until you get auto dump. The 2HT and stay by the rear doors.

When you do your layout, don't forget the ceiling. You can hang your electrical line reels or your hose reel from the ceiling ribs. Or set the reels out to the sides - Duane Oxley builds some nice reel units...

Gary Heathcock, who operated a TM out of an Astro van for many years, said that hose reels took up too much room, so he would just wind the hoses up, in 25' sections using hose wraps with velcro straps, and just lay them in the van. Said it worked real well (no pun) and took up way less room.

All the septic pump guys in our area wrap their suction hoses around the back and sides of their bulk tank. Never ran a TM, and I'm wondering if I guy could hang his hoses on the outside of the truck somehow and still keep it road safe.

With enough bungie cords, you can carry about anything...

Hi Andy, nice setup and that unit looks kinda familiar!! ;D

I can tell you what I would do if that was my setup.....I would lose the cart and mount the LP heater at the very back on the passenger side, move the Recoil to point out the side of the van (where the Mytee sprayer and vac are), and put the hose reel where the Recoil is now. Hope this helps, I would like to see some pics of the finished setup when you are finished!

Congrats on the new equipment. It looks like new.

Hose reels take up a lot of space. If you're only going to run a few sections of hose I would skip it for now. Use the velcro hose straps that many distributors sell to keep the hoses wrapped. This would also give you more flexibility with your cargo area.

Agree with here! I ditched my solution reel all together and just use the vac reel. IMO it saves space and you qd's.

Mike Charles strikes again lol.

Thanks for the tips, I'll play around with different lay outs before start drilling holes in the floor.  I wanted to see how hard it would be to roll up 50 ft of 2 inch hose, and It was a pain in the ****. I can see why the hose reel was invented.

E, How do you suggest mounting the little giant to the floor of my van?  Should I just strap it to the back of my passenger seat? Would it burn the seat or the floor?

Andy,

You should really think about getting a steal partition to protect your skull in an accident.

Check out American Van, they have a lot of cool stuff to help you get strapped down and organized.

Andy, in my van...I had the heater mounted directly to the floor and carried the propane tank in a milk crate that I stole from the back of the grocery store :o , that way I could pull out the propane tank and put it outside when using the heater. I meant mounting the heater at the  very back of the van on the passenger side, right behind the wheel well.

Andy - you need more experience wrapping hose.

Lay it on the ground and just put it in a circle as you twist the hose a bit.

We used to wrap all our hoses when we used the big machines because they didn't make hose reels big enough and You can't pull 800' of hose through a building.

I get what your saying now E,

heater in the back corner bolted to the floor,  hose reel in back, recoil in front (running it out of the side)  Then steal milk crate from store for propane storage  ;)

I'll keep practicing Mike , but seems like a hose reel is the way to go.

I got  lucky, and meet a real nice carpet cleaner who had a spare hose reel and he offered it to me for free. I just got to pay for shipping.

I bought a 50' section of vac hose and had problems coiling it up. So I exchanged it for 2 25' sections. I can wrap 25' section easily and use the velcro straps.

I also find it easy to just throw the hose in the van rather than using a reel.

Andy, you keep the extractor in the van ? How much hose length do you run.

I was looking at 2 inch hoses and noticed they only come in 50 ft sections, the 1.5 inch come in 25 ft sections.

You can cut any hose to a different length then screw on a hose cuff.

E,
I thought the reels couldn't be disconnected from your bane tanks, or did you have another one?

Anyways , It's only a 15 hour drive to my house E, are you sure you don't want to deliver it to me? I'll give you a dollar, and a candy bar if you do.  ;D

Mike,
I'll cut one of them 50 footers in half and see if that makes it easier.

Noweare,
I 'll be running 500 feet of hose.   :o
Actually,  from every one I've talked to it seems the recoil will handle 100 feet real well, and I think that will be enough for most homes.

No, I have a couple of extra reels laying around + the Bane stuff. 100' should be your max run with the Recoil in the van...after that either get a booster or just unload the Recoil.

I did 98% of my jobs with 100' of hose, just need to get a little creative with your parking and hose runs. As tempting as the $1 and candy bar sound, I think I'll pass:)

Being the former high school athlete that I am,...

I went out in my front yard and spent about an  hour rolling and un rolling vac hose. I got it down to a science . Then  I made some hooks in the celling of my van and hung the hose from it,  takes up very little space!!

Then I  drilled it...
I grabbed the bundles of hose, stretched them out hooked every thing up.

Then I disconnected every thing, rolled up the hoses  put a strap on and hung them back up.   Then repeated the process a few times till I got it down to a science.

I figure I can have every thing set up in 2 to 3 minutes. And about 5 minutes to discone ct every thing roll up and put away.  I might even be faster than that. When my wife gets home I'll have her run the stop watch.

To heck with a hose reel !  ;)    Thanks for saving me money guys.

As tempting as all this cheaping out sounds, I love my hose reels.  I can peel off one section at a time, run it into the house without dragging hose, and lay it down as I walk.  Winding up is a sinch, throw it behind your van and reel away.  Way faster than winding it up to put it into a bag.  Now I know a high school athlete could probably beat me, but remember that working smarter equals working harder equals working faster.  There are hose reels for a reason.  People wouldn't buy them if they didn't work.  Everyone would be running around without them and just throw the hoses into the van, hell I would if I thought I could save some money.  But listen, your biggest investment, your most important tool, is your body.  If it makes it easier on yourself to have hose reels, it makes sense to buy them for a couple hundred bucks.  And trust me, I can wind up a solution line WAY faster than you can coil it and put it in a bag or put a strap on it.  I can also teach you (or explain to you) how to take solution line off of the hose reel into your hands faster than you can get the hose bag out of your van, and lay it out in the house ready for action.  I do have big hands, though, which helps.  ha ha.  Again, not trying to sound "snooty" here, just trying to help!  If you can't afford the hose reel, do what you gotta do.  But your van will look way nicer with the reels, andyou will look much more organized to your clients.

Andy,

If you decide to get a reel for your vac hoses, I'd highly recommend getting an electric reel...If you ever get to play with one, you will never want to reel anything manually.  We used to do 200-400 ft on commercial jobs late at night it's the last thing you wanna be doing after a long night's of work.
