Measuring a Radius
« on: June 27, 2010, 04:11:19 PM »
Got a call to p/u 2 area rugs, custy says 8x10  and  an 11x14.   She says they are oval , so how do you get sq. ft. on a radius, or what is the formula to figure this out .   I only like to charge for cleanable sq. ft.    :-\

( YAHOO !!!  brown wool area rugs, no browning problems on this one I bet. )  ;D
NOTE:  If you finish up with an acid rinse or a fiber rinse it drastically reduces the browning problems from the start.  ;)

I'll take a stab at it. Think of the oval as three sections. A rectangle in the middle and two half circles of equal dimensions. Area of the rectangle equals Length times Width. Area of the two ends which equal one circle, is Pi (3.14) x radius squared. Radius will be equal to the distance from the of the outside edger of the rectangle to the outside edge of one half of the circle at either end of the rug.

Then again, you could just say $xxx for small, medium or large rugs. What's small, medium or large is pretty arbitrary. That's how I price rugs and I've never had a complaint.

I measure the length then approximate (guesstimate) the amount of width that would make it a rectangle. I do this with a measuremeter if that helps

Don't make it overly complicated. The customer is only concerned about the total price.  :)

Like Mike says no one cares how you got there, just that you got there.

It's always a good idea to inspect rugs on site before giving out prices.
