metal roof
« on: October 24, 2011, 04:03:25 PM »
hope everyone has been as busy as i have with the lack of posts on here lately

Ive been busy re-roofing our place. The shingles that were previously installed were "top of the line" but only lasted 13 years, in part due to the 3/12 pitch roof. This stuff has a warranty of 40 years and of course will last longer then that.

Would have taken allot less time if the sofets/facia and gutters were installed properly. They left off the drip edge so I had to replace the entire perimeter of the house due to rot  :03:

It was extremely easy (and fast!) to install as the sheets come in 38"x(whatever length you need)

Another bonus is ridge cap venting.  The peak of the house is completely open, sealed with foam strips (to stop bugs, debris from getting in) before the ridge cap is installed. So no whirly birds needed  :great:

If anyone is needing to re-roof in the future I would highly recommend a metal roof, especially if you have a low pitch roof.  Its cost was only 5 cents /sq higher then shingles. If you want color its an extra 10cents/sq

I went metal also about 9 months ago. Summer cooling cost was lower.
Did have a power vent installed since hookup was in place. The vent has a cover with holes for air circulation to keep out critters. It's a little extra cooling for our summers.

I've also noticed the lack of posting.

Roof looks good!  :great:

I'm thinking metal or plastic if I ever re roof this place. Snow slides off easier.

The old shingle roof was left on and it is very quiet when raining.

very quiet
your insulation in the attic is enough to kill the sound

Did you strap the roof George or go right over top the singles?

Big weight difference too. Would have needed 71 bags of shingles @ 80 pounds - 5680
Total metal weight 1600

I had a roofer do it. They went right over the shingles.

I've heard of condensation problems on the underside with low ball installation. Know anything about that? Our roof gets replaced next year. Should have been done two years ago.

Not heard of any moisture issues.
I chose my installer just like choosing a carpet cleaner. Good reputation. Been around a long time. Gives personal service.

All very valid points! Especially about the take down and instalation of metal vs shingle, much easier! Oh ya and of course the whole snow shoveling thing  ;D Just remember its also slicker on da feets. My favorite is copper roofing.. ..someday, someday... :13:

Have you noticed any lose of cell phone coverage when inside the house? I have heard of people with less then max coverage having issues once a metal roof is installed
