Deer Season - Got Mine, Kinda
« on: November 18, 2011, 12:40:35 PM »
Okay its 6:00 am this morning and I'm driving down a very dark country road about 5 miles from home, drinking coffee listening to the radio. Otta now here come deer they miss the oncoming traffic which i have coming towards me on the other side of my vehicle is a 4 foot ditch drop off. I decide to take the deer between the headlights rather than hit on coming traffic or potentially roll the van in the ditch drop off. So I hit the deer or the deer hits me I pull over and get out to check the damage.
Deer is still kicking in the field as another one watchs, my van grill is broke but very little damage and drivable. The couple that was behind me check on me and ask about the deer. Well I have no room in my van and they really look like they could use it. So I say its yours Happy Thanksgiving, as i walk back to the van they ask if I have a gun to kill it, nope can't help you I'm on my way to work. About that time the doe is making horrid noises and I'm feeling bad. The guy says what can we do. If I call 911 these folks won't get the deer and my rates may go up. Well it's still pretty dark out so looking for something to hit the deer with is not likely and I really don't want to get blood all over my uniform.
Finally after thinking about it I tell the guy to come with me and we walk out to the deer, front legs are broke and hind ones aren't moving like they should. I finally have had enough of the animal suffering and horrid noises no chance of getting kicked only bitten. I man up and throw my jacket over the deers mouth to protet me from getting bitten grab continue to wrap the jacket around the mouth tight take the sleeves and pull and twist hard while hugging the head snapped its freaking neck. Anyway this guy is looking at me like a freakin serial killer, we carry it up and load it and thats my morning. made it to my cleaning which I was glad was a realtor empty house it allowed me to get my crap together. Kinda freaked me out after thinking about it. Anyway be careful out there.

Right on Jeff. You did what you had to do for the situation. I would love to have some deer jerky. I bet they were happy as could be to have all that meat! Glad your van and you made it out ok.

I've hit a couple myself over the years.

Called the State Police the first time and they had someone who could come out and get it so it wouldn't be wasted. Second one I hit doing 60 with a pickup at night. Did quite a bit of damage and couldn't find the deer. Probably didn't make it far.

You can buy Deer "whistles" at Walmart and other retailers. Pretty sure the cost was under $10? All they are is a couple of plastic things you attach to the front of your vehicle with double face tape. Works if you are going over 35 MPH. We can't hear them but animals do. They do get the attention of deer. I've seen them stop in their tracks and look. Has saved me a few times.

Glad no one was hurt.

I was going around 45 - 50 mph. Last night when I got home I have 4 deer eating in my yard about 15 yards from the window. I feed them from first frost till spring, the grandkids love watching them.

Wife totaled one of our vehicles earlier this year. (Fully covered.) Doing 60. Deer between the lights and it disappears off the road. She didn't even stop until she got home thinking if she did she might not be able to get the car started again. Along the same lines, we are in gun season up here. Son got one with a bow a few weeks ago. We've been hunting only about 7 years. I haven't even gotten a shot off. He's put 3 or  in the freezer. Our family loves venison.
