Saturday project
« on: July 17, 2010, 10:55:02 PM »
After reading a thread here, where Mike C posted a few pics of a claw built with Lowe's parts, I thought I would give it a try.  I used HD parts instead just because it's closer to home, but it still cost about $25 for the whole shebang.  I don't really know why I did it, just something I felt compelled to try I guess.

It worked, but I think it would work a little better with smaller diameter hose or even shorter hose for that matter.  I poured a gallon of water on the carpet (no pad just concrete) and it sucked just about all of it back out to the point of being damp.  I may have to do some more tweaking on it but I was pleased with the way it performed.  The Craftsman is just a little too big and bulky to want to carry around but I mostly use it on remodel jobs where I can carry it in and leave it until the job is done.

The Ridgid model that resembles a canister vac seems to be a good size and is 5 HP as well I believe.  I may have to pick one up to continue my experiments.

So for under $100 or so you could have a water/urine extraction setup?  ::)

It works, I still think I'd rather have professional looking equipment in a client's home...it's all about perception these days.  I'd use that till I can get a water claw and a porty.

I agree about perception and being professional looking.  I wouldn't use it on a job unless I know the person pretty well.  I haven't had the need for one to this point, but if and when I do, I will pick up a small one on ebay.

Jose - does that work pretty well for you?  The nice thing about the one that I made is that the clear hose allows one to see everything being sucked out.

I did the same test you did in my garage. Results sound the same.  I tried it on my own carpet after the test.  Seems to work fine.  I did wish it had a clear tube. Now that I see yours, I'm going to try to modify it.  The tool looks professional until you get really close to it.  But for $30 can't beat that!  I will try to upload pics of it tomorrow.

These home made tools along with a carpet extractor should look "professional" enough?

A shop vac will work fine but I guess I can see where it looks less professional. Only thing I can say about that though is .............how much do you want to spend for a machine to suck PEE?

Yeah, when you put it THAT way, it does sound a little bizarre.

I landed a job for a friend who has a puppy, so I may just try it out on a couple pee spots to see what happens.  After all, it beats me having to pee on the floor just to try it, right?

I'm a bit OCD when it comes to appearance Mike, if I had the $ I would go all out and get the best so I can look the best...I know it won't get me all the jobs, but maybe that's just the pre madona in me.

I do remember Jondon having a special on their Dry Pro extractor plus a gase of Matrix Pee chems for around $240 bucks, seemed like a great deal to me, and you can use it for water damage later on much more efficient than the smaller claw.  But if money is tight I guess the DIY works too.

The DIY would work fine around here. ..........Especially if the odor was gone.  :)

Extraction is only one part of the process anyway.

I use the tool from urinebegone.com.   it was $30.

I ordered one from him and now 8 days later no contact, no response to a call and his website says a 3-5 week for the units.  I have made it clear I do not loan out money for free and want a full refund or I can do a chargeback.  I am thinking of building one now which I am sure I can do for less than $41.90 he charged.

I was notified on 10/21 it would be shipped that week.  It did arrive by US Mail today 10/26 broken when the wand meets the foot.  I called and talked to Adam (said he was a partner) who assured me a replacement would be sent and that they were have problems with their assembler.  He then took over 5 minutes trying to sell me on a tile and grout bizop they have now.  The ideal time to approach me for more of my money is after I have been satisfied, not gravely disappointed.  I'll update you on this urinebegone situation.  Meanwhile, I probably would not look into them for an alternative in approaching the urine jobs.

I've been using my Flash Xtractor that I got from Steam Brite, been working out pretty well.  Deff worth the $ and the customer service is very good.

Going to go look at a pee job in the morning.

My buffer still has the bumper stickers from Home Depot on it. My bucket has Home Depot on it and I use a pump-up sprayer and gross OVER $100 an hour.

People ask me all of the time "Do you rent that from HD?" I say 'No, I bought it used there.' and smile.

(The smile is store bought too now)
