Repair of Host Freestyle Machine
« on: April 21, 2011, 01:10:22 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get my Host Freestyle machine repaired? Somewhere in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area preferred.  It was chugging along this morning, I think it has been making more of a "working" sound the last few times I used it, and then quit and popped a breaker in the house.  Reset the breaker and put the machine on its side and the brushes were hard to turn.  Freed up the brushes some turned it back on and it ran for a few seconds and then I smelled smoke and turned it off.  I had checked the gear box a few weeks ago and re-lubed it and I didn't notice any difference in the way the machine sounded, so I think the issue is higher up in the motor area.

Maybe this would help?  If not maybe you could call the national host number and ask them where you could take/send it to try to get fixed.
Sorry to hear, sounds like an electrical issue or wire came loose somewhere?

Well I know now that the motor brushes are bad.  I took it apart and the brushes came apart taking them out of the housing.  Hopefully that is all that is wrong.  I found brushes on line for $12.42 each so I am going to order them and see if that solves the problem.  If I need to get a new motor I'll just have the one in it rebuilt, there is a motor shop in the next town over from me that should be able to do it.

Well the problem was not the brushes, but a bad bearing.  After I got the brushes in, which did help the motor run better, I could tell which area of the motor was getting hot.  Took a while to get the motor apart but when I did the rear bearing fell apart.  So with the bearing now on order I hope this will fix the issue.  Guess I'll have to add motor repair to my list of skills!

wow, replacing brushed doesn't seem to hard, but kudos on actually getting into the motor.  sounds like quite the project.

I hope you get that fixed. Sorry to hear about the issues.  I guess on the positive side when/if you get it running again you'll pretty much know how to fix anything that can go wrong with it.

That is true.  At least I have found sources for parts.  The parts lists and diagrams in the manuals have been a great help in troubleshooting.  Really the machine is pretty simple so fixing it is not a huge chore as long as parts are available.  The alternative is of course it to send it back to Racine, but I consider that a LAST resort.  Adapt and overcome!

Well I got the bearing replaced, but the motor is still running hot and smoking.  I guess there is a winding issue some where.  I guess its off to the motor shop for it, I'm out of ideas.
