cat pump might need a rebuild hmm
« on: June 23, 2011, 03:00:54 PM »
Just noticed last week that my solution line has been kinda pulsating. I gave always kept my line pressures down to 200 psi.
Is this a sign it needs rebuilt???
It has at least 4000 hours on it. Probably more to be honest.

Or...

you have a leak...

Or..

The Regulator valve is opening to keep the PSI that low.

if that is the case, you will need to rebuild it sooner than had that not been the case.

The worse thing for pumps is on/off cycle.

They are easy enough to rebuild. It is the ONE thing I could do easy on my TM. That and put the gas in.

Hello, I've had a pressure washing business since 1978.
I was wondering why you would ever set a pressure washer at 200psi ??
I run an 18hp and a 16 hp, both have 5.6 gpm pumps on them and to gain the most water flow, I run them at 2500psi.
As to a Cat pump with 4000 hours, it could be a pump problem, but it sounds more like [if it shudders] that you need to back-flush it. It sounds like the water intake has a clog? Or it could just be the unloader?
Is there water mixing with the oil? Does it look milky in the sight-glass?
I no longer use Cat pumps, but they are the best and I have run them for many years without problems. I'm sure I have put more than 4000 hours on them.

Chuck - This CAT pump is mounted in a carpet cleaning machine. They would normally operate at pressures of  100-1000 psi or so.

Same pump though so all your tips are valid for carpet cleaners too.  ;D

Nope no cavatation yet the internal seals are ok. I ordered new barrels and plungers seals.
I unfortunately have to remove it from the machine. Two bolts and a few high pressure lines takes about an hour on a bad day. :13:

Well, that solves that one!
I wondered what kind of pressure cleaning he was doing with 200psi
I didn't have a clue that Cat pumps were in carpet cleaners :017:
The only thing I do with carpet cleaners, is call them when my carpet is dirty!  ;D
Learn something new every day! Actually, now that I'm old and getting dumber, more like every 2 weeks!

The pressure end of truck mount carpet cleaners and pressure washers are identical in parts and operation. Parts are usually less expensive if bought from a pressure wash supply house. Carpet cleaning industry charges a lot more for the same thing. Most carpet cleaners don't know that the two systems are similar though.

The propane and K-1 heated carpet cleaning units also work like the heated pressure wash units. Great heat. Used less in recent years as most use heat exchange technology to capture heat from the engine exhaust. Works fine for low flow like carpet cleaning. Probably not very practical for pressure washing because of the high flow.

I forgot to mention earlier............You might want to check the unloader/pressure regulator to make sure its lubed? Had a situation like yours once and I took that apart and lubed with Superlube synthetic grease and it worked fine after. Most TM manufacturers have a blurb about that in the maintenance section of your manual.
