Broken set screw
« on: August 10, 2011, 12:34:58 AM »
Week before last I had the set screw which attaches the counter balance assembly to the motor on my op machine break clean off  :banghead:. Tried drilling with a cobalt drill bit, set up on a drill press. Barely a scratch. I took the motor to an auto machine shop who said they could not help me but did recommend a local company that does EDM Drilling ( Electrical Discharge Machining ). They were able to take care of it for me in a matter of hours for a reasonable $50 bucks  :great:. So if you have the misfortune of this bolt breaking off your maching look up an EDM company in your area. Then just wait a week for the new set screw to come in!

Very similar thing happened to me a couple months ago. Even sent pics of parts to supplier was told thats wasn't correct and went ahead and sent wrong parts anyway. I was able to e Frustratingt the screw removed in a day from a local motor shop which impressed me the rest was just frustrating. I hve since added a spare part to my parts dept.

Can't you buy the set screw at a hardware store?

Not even Fastenal carried the set screw locally. It is roughly two inches long and a grade 8 screw. I also plan on adding an extra screw to keep around. Should have ordered two! Anyhow were back in business, and by the way we are very happily covered up with work. :great: Just hated draging the porty around for a week!
