Well it finally happened.............My two Saints met up with a skunk. Happened last night when I went next door to visit the parents. The skunk was under a bird feeder eating something when one of the dogs noticed it and ran for it. The skunk went for the woods but the dog quickly caught up and got it right in the face. The second dog came right away so he didn't get directly sprayed. At first I thought the skunk was a porcupine because it was so dark. Hardly any white. The odor was quickly evident though.
SO, how to deal with it? I had read something online that Dr. Aziz (Fabpro) had posted about this. Its a formula of Hydrogen Peroxide (1QT 3% fresh unopened), dish detergent (1 teaspoon) and some baking soda (1/4 cup). As luck would have it I had all the ingredients on hand and found the formula. The idea is to mix the stuff up and apply then dwell for 5-10 minutes. I decided to use a trigger spray bottle to apply because of where he got sprayed. Misted on and rubbed it in (Yes, I actually wore gloves for this one) . Rinsed off after 10 minutes and NO ODOR. Formula worked perfectly! Kept the one dog outside until treated so nothing inside was affected.
The skunk spray is an oily substance. The formula works to break up the oil and oxidize what causes the odor. Cheap and affective. From what I understand the over the counter skunk spray products use an enzyme as the main ingredient. Not sure how effective those are but I'm thinking they would work too.
This could probably be used inside to deodorize as well. Just test to see if everything is colorfast. Apply, dwell then clean or rinse.
