Personal computer security
« on: March 03, 2011, 01:15:35 PM »
I was just reading on Hostgator forums some great advice about computer security:

Quote
A huge number of issues we receive stem from one of the two following scenarios, and I believe these are some of the most important items to review :

1. Malware/Trojan infected local computers, which are sniffing or stealing their saved passwords. These often result in either remote attackers FTP'ing into your account, and uploading either phishing pages or injected other malicious code into your pages to spread the malware further. It's extremely important you have a strong password and keep your computer free and clear of malware and other malicious software. If you need to scan your account the Housecall software by Trend Micro is very good http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ ; I also recommend MalwareBytes Anti-Malware at http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

#2 related to outdated site software. I just updated everything on this site so we are good to go from that standpoint. If you run a website of any kind make sure you are running the latest version. Many times security issues are discovered and patched in later versions.

After reading this and other posts I took everyone off Forum Firewall whitelist. We were getting some positives so I'm wondering if this is related to the above advice?

I fear getting viruses on my sites. as far as the home p.c. no chance. If I could get D.O.D. firewalls I would. I have router, modem, windows/norton firewalls. Heck sometimes I cant even get into some of my regular sites.. Pita...

I went to the malware sight and downloaded...I got Hotbar and can not take it off now. It has turned off my panda, it is sending popups every 15 seconds and I am covered in viruses.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD FROM THE MALWARE SIGHT!

Now I have to take my computer in for a complete cleanup.

What malware site?

This one: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

The free version is fine for most of us.

That is the one (I think)

I had to accept 'hotbar' to download. Suddenly my Panda went nuts and then, shut down.

I ran a scan this morning and I am covered up. So I go to uninstall hotbar from control panel...and it tells me I am not the admin...

I tried to remove it 3 different ways and all the while, my computer keeps logging on and sending me popups...

Finally I found another site to use to unload hotbar. Now I have to clean all of the crap off of my computer.

I use firefox.

I found a billion threads about how bad hotbar is and how hard it can be to remove.

For any software............ NEVER load anything other than what you want.

There is usually a small box to uncheck if there is something extra. Read all the fine print too. A lot of software people have stuff hidden. They make money off it.

I just went to the site to download Malwarebytes and didn't have to agree to anything. I did notice it redirected to some other site and there were a lot of links and stuff there. Would be easy to click on the wrong thing? Wasn't like that when I got it a few months ago.

Try Spybot Search and Destroy.  http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

I am an awesome carpet cleaner, magician, comic and sex macheen (trust me) but when it comes to computers....

I am brain dead.

It is highly probable I clicked the wrong thing....but whatever I did screwed my computer up royal.

But I had no choice when I went to the website so I figure it was ok. Boy was I ever wrong.

I got panda back up and running, I think I got the hotbar off and am about to take this mess to my computer pal and enough money for him to buy himself a bag of his favorite smoke...so long as he does that after he cleans up my mess.

No worries...I got people.
