Protectant
« on: April 15, 2011, 09:13:22 AM »
I lied in the other thread when I said that I wouldn't have any more questions about chemicals for a while. :-[

What kind of protectant are you guys using? I see there are 3 different offerings from Vacaway, is Fiber Cop a good product? Looks like it is a good deal less expensive than the others. Is there another brand I should be looking at?

All the Vacaway ones work good. If you look at the descriptions you will see that the Fiber Cop is ready to use. No dilution. Silver dilutes 1:2 and the Gold 1:8. Not sure how that breaks down in cost?

There is also the brand names..............Dupont Teflon and Scotchgard.

You will notice that this stuff isn't cheap. The ingredients cost money.

When calculated per square foot of diluted (or not) application its pennies per foot. Good money maker and really does help carpets stay cleaner and last longer.

I use Scotchguard. The reason being is that its a recognized name people are familiar with.
Mike is right, stuff isn't cheap at 50 bucks a gallon, but it is with a 4-1 ratio.    Makes 5 gallons and is good for 1000 sq. ft.

I love and use alot of Vacaways products EXCEPT "Fiber Cop". That stuff was sticky and gummed up my sprayer. I didn't like it at all. When I run out of my "Special stuff" I will probably go with Soil Blocker. But that's going to be years from now.

although i have never used it, i've heard the same about vacaways protector, being sticky and creating clogging problems.

over the many years i been at this, i've used a vast array of protectors, and till this day, the 2 available from cleancraft remain my favorite!

I've used the Vacaway Gold.

Not sticky. Same consistency as other protectors on the market.

Have not used Fiber Cop (ready to use) or the Silver.

If I had to guess, the fiber cop might start to cure in the bottle if partially used then setting around for a bit? The others are diluted with water prior to use.

Hardball works real well and I think it smells good. I did have a customer who was bothered by it though.  Thought it smelled to solvent like. I thought it smelled like Grap Popsicles.

I'm using Green Guard now.  Very inexpensive, sprays on well and no complaints as of yet.

I like Soil Blocker too and they have a great deal on that and a multi sprayer if you need one.

They also have a lot of info on selling protector and Mike is a great guy to chat with.

I'll be going back to SB when I finish up the Green Guard just because the SB is RTU and I know it works well.

Does anyone have any opinions on which protecter is the fastest drying? Soil Blocker claims to be fast drying but I have no real world experience to know if that is true. I'm guessing they all work well, I would like to find the one that dries the quickest if there is such a thing.

Solvent based drys fastest.

That being said I didn't like using them.

Why wouldn't you want them to dry fast? Also wondering if you spray it on after cleaning or just mix it in with the cleaning mixture juice.. does that matter if using solvent or water based for when you can/should apply it? :017:

Who said I didn't want it to dry? I dislike using solvents.

Water based dries just fine. You would apply after cleaning. There are some newer chems like Vacaway that impart some stain resistance while cleaning. I don't think the amount of product in the cleaner is as high as a dedicated protector product.

One place you don't want to use solvents is around open flame.

I think I read what you were trying to say wrong above... it sounded like the reason you didn't like solvents is because they dry fastest..
Good looking out on the flame/solvent scenario... Im guessing you have some crazy stories about that!
This may have you  :banghead: but.. what would be the reason to not add the protectant in with the cleaning agent? Is it just because they are doing the opposite effect to carpet?

Adding protector into cleaning agents is why we have encaps today. There are many products that have it in their formulations now.

I think the biggest reasons for a separate product are concentration of protectant and the ability to apply later after cleaning.

If you need to speed drying you can use a fan. We always had them on our trucks. Not needed most of the year here but humidity can be higher in summer.

Does anyone else use Green Guard? I have been studying protectants lately and it seems that GG is by far the most economical. They claim a 1:9 ratio and 6000 sq ft per gallon of product, but is it any good?

For those of you using Soil Blocker, do you use the solvent based or the water based?

When you say "EPA Green", are you talking about Green Guard, or something else? I thought Green Guard was the only EPA approved carpet protectant?

Schaper’s has been using Surround products on our showroom carpet, with multiple encapsulation machines for three (3) years. We have found that Bonnet Pro’s Surround Ultra and Guardian Protector have kept our carpets looking better than ever.  Guardian has kept us from cleaning our carpets for over two and half (2-1/2) months. Even when we used HWE the carpet would re soil rapidly, sometimes within days. With Bonnet Pro’s desire to produce the best encapsulation products, we highly endorse these products.

On the commercial side, I don't get protectant requested all that much. As said earlier, ScothGard is a trusted name. At the dilution and spread rate, you can lay it down for about $.04 p/sq/ft. So on 5000 sq/ft a clip I usually charge $.10 without a spot guarantee.

It does cost close to $50/ gal ($190 for a case of 4), so I would imagine if there are chems with similar properties that are less expensive......charge the same and keep the difference.
