Pad Origin
« on: November 30, 2011, 09:05:31 AM »
I've seen a lot of discussion about pads recently.

Many have been quick to post the lowest prices for these products. Some say they would pay more for a US made product.

My question........Do you ask where they are from?  :017:  or do you shop price?

I just bought Glads because they worked well, price wasn't a concern.

I just ordered a couple of pads from Challenger to try on my Defender.

Hope I can find a good pad to replace the Glads or I just might have to get Phil to teach me to run a rotary :-\

I've never asked were they were made Mike but I knew that the majority of textiles sold in the US were not manufactured here.

Price was never a big issue with Glads because they worked but now that I'm shopping around for pads it is definitely a concern because I've purchased pads in the past that tore up quickly.

I liked the cotton pads from challenger because they performed well on the Challenger that I sold. Big O I'm nor sure if the Standard 100% cotton pads that I used on my challenger is the same one that I used in the past. I tried the Turbo Pad. It was thick but tore after 1 use under my Orbot. I've never tried their Eduro Pad.

Mike-
I never ask where they are made but I only purchase from American distributors. For instance John G. glad pads would it had made a difference had I known they were made by towel heads, Nope, I support American distributors. Price wise sure I'll pay alittle more for American made as long as its not ridiculous difference.

I think that was my point.

If you KNEW they were made in USA would it make a difference? How much more would you pay?

Unfortunately I think I already know the answer. IF anyone cared about buying USA we wouldn't be relying so much on China. Most consumers only care about price and companies like the profit. That is one of the reasons our country is in the predicament it is. US made products have to cost more. We have laws here, require insurancr, expect companies to take care of employees and not pollute the environment.

Yes, most textiles are made overseas now. There are still a few made here but you really have to look for them.

Did you know that Tuway makes most of their pads (bonnets) here in USA? Last thing I knew they imported Microfiber because it isn't made here. I'm trying to confirm with them whether they assemble them here from imported material or if the pads are made overseas. Yes there are other Tuway look a like pads but not made here. That is why I sell Tuway on my site.

One of the main reasons our prices are higher are unions which inflate some prices ridiculously. So are you saying regardless of price we should only purchase American. Heres a thought I rode Harleys most of my life and though they are Ameircan bikes most have japan batteries, what is your take on that? I took offense that you assume I sell my heritage for the almighty dollar.

Jeff - I certainly wasn't out to offend anyone.

I agree that unions got too big for their britches. I don't think they hold the same power today they once did? Not every shop is union run either.

At least you tried to buy American. Mostly American is doing pretty good these days.  :13: I am not saying buy American only. Quality, fitness for use, etc need to be factored in too. What I'm against is buying on price without even knowing or caring where something came from.

There are those out there that ARE driven by the dollar. No long term thought is put into purchases. Sure you saved a buck today but someones job might be gone tomorrow. We didn't get to where we are as a country overnight. The whole process started a long time ago but yet here we are. All those individual choices people made have added up.

I guess what I was trying to gauge with my first post was.........If I were to make pads that cost more than others on the market could I sell them? John G kind of answered that in another post. When others began to copy Glads it drove the price down and made it harder to sell his.

I know I can't be the cheapest out there and make any money. There just isn't that kind of room for margin. If I advertise Made in USA would it make a difference or would cleaners still go for the less expensive pad?

OP cleaners will buy quality, that was proven when Glads were high quality, also the reason we all continued to buy them hoping the quality would come back. Regardless where its made when quality counts quality cleaners will buy them. There will always be price shoppers in any walk of life, to dumb to figure out quality is remembered long after price is forgotton.

My Nissan NV is made in Canton, Mississippi. Some Fords are made in Mexico.....What do you do? Do you look at where the profits go? Who's employed? Where they are employed and support them on that?
I buy pads based on price. Why? Because i am BROKE half the time and just trying to get by in life until butthead is out of office and then hope and pray we as a nation can get back on our feet. I shop at Walmart. Why? Because i am BROKE and I can get more there. I restore japanese motorcycles and have found that I also keep alot of shops here in the states busy because I buy parts from them.

Just being honest here but i would love to be able to pay more for an American made pad. But it dang well better last!!

You do realize that pads are consumables? :017:

What is your definition of "last"?

#1 concern here is quality.  When I started OP everybody was using cotton pads.  I believe they were about $6 and lasted about 40-60 uses before you could see through them.  So I was ordering every month or two but they were cheap enough that it wasn't too bad.  Glads came out and were at first I think something like $16.50.  Seemed like a lot at the time, over double what we were paying, but I got 200-300 uses out of the first 50 pads I ever bought.  After seeing how long those pads lasted, I thought the price of $16.50 was a steal of a deal.  So like was said above, ever since then I've been re-ordering hoping to get some more pads that performed like that batch.  Now the recent batches the price went up even more, mostly because they were getting in huge numbers of pads with their batch order that they couldn't even sell them so to be able to pay for the batch the price of the ones they could sell had to go up.

As far as made in America, I try to support things made in USA, but like you said it's often impossible to do so.  As far as pads, if I saw a pad made in USA for OP my assumption would be that it would "probably" be of very good quality so I would try it out even if the price per pad was rather high.  If it worked like I wanted and lasted well I would pay a premium price no question.

It would be nice if Tuway would start making a pad that was thinner and more suited to OP.  A thinner microfiber would be great.  Also the ones with the scrub strips but basically half as thick.  OK by me if only one side was meant to touch the carpet instead of both.  If they could come up with something similar to a glad or microfiber/cotton blend that would be great too.

Here is my point.

I want and will support Amercian made consumables, products, things, entities or whatever. Problem is I want them to "last" if I am going to pay more money for them. Our 2011 Ford escape is having alot of problems, My 2012 Nissan NV is not.

Get what I am saying?  Alot of American made stuff is just junk with a hefty price tag. I am not saying that I wont support American made things. I just think the Americans making the things just want to slap the label on it and be done nd make thier money. The CRAFTSMANSHIP is still not there like it was 40+ years ago.

Sorry about the Ford Escape Jon.

No worries Ray. Nothing that cant be fixed under warranty. We are still diehard Ford fans. Things happen.

You sure you weren't putting our ford together when it came down the line?  :celebrate: :great:

while i'm all for anything made in the states, this is now truely a world economy. so with that, we must do our homework, and determine who we buy what from!

back in the early '70's, if i asked you what you thought of a datsun (nissan) vehicle, or a radio or tv, made in japan, what'd be yer answer? ABSOLUTE JUNK, of course.
i ask you that same question today!

one the air duct machines i built 10yrs ago, i used vac motors from china. they lasted a whole month. 3yrs ago, i built a dryer vent vacuum using the same motors, from the same distributor, and the fellow i sold the machine to is still using it daily 3yrs later!

as far as OP pads go, i think i've used about all type cotton and blended pads available, and found the best ones came from either turkey or pakistan, especially the 100% cotton ones!!!
