Got my GEM stair tool, now what?
« on: January 11, 2012, 11:19:50 PM »
I need to get the pad driver think figured out. I know I need the piece of velcro and I can get it from CCSOP but then what? Where does it go? On the business end of this buffer there seems to be a white foam pad, a grey foam pad and a thin green pad that looks a bit like a brillo pad on the outside.

Do any of these other layers have to come off? Do I glue the velcro right over the green layer?

By looking at the pictures of CCS's Stepson, it looks like I would have to seperate the Grey foam layer from the white foam and glue the velcro directly to the white foam?

The Challenger tool doesn't have the green layer just the grey soft foam and the harder white styrofoam below that.

The Velcro started coming off the grey soft foam no matter what type of glue I used finally I just took off the to soft foam glued it to the white and it's stayed on ever since.

If you don't get a whole sheet of velcro to cover the driver you can try gluing on 6 or 8 pieces.  Home Depot sells rectangles of industrial velcro, just glue those on and try...

I have the challenger one and there's just some white foam with velcro glued on to that.  I've had to re-glue it about 4 times since I got it.

Here is what my GEM looks like. Should I seperate the grey section from the white section? It is glued on pretty good with a contact adhesive it appears.

Does the green layer adhere to the pad? On the challenger stair tool the green layer is were the velcro goes.

It seems to hold to the pad somewhat but I'm not sure if I trust it to hold?

I would pull that green layer off and put velcro down.

Are you saying I should leave the softer gray layer?

Dave, The grey layer is what the velcro is glued to on the challenger stair tool.

Mo, thanks for the bit of info about removing the gray layer. I've had little luck keeping a velcro pad on the gray layer, especially with the new driver I ordered for my step son this past summer. Maybe they changed glue? Interesting point, when I leave this tool in the van or trailer, thinking it won't be affected by the cold, the velcro pad comes right off. I mean it just pops off the gray layer like it was never attached.  :-[ This only happens when I let it get down to 10 or 15 degrees. I never thought of glue being sensitive to temperature.

The Velcro on my machine is on the grey foam. I have never had any issues. I would think it would work for your situation as well.

The velcro on mine is also glued onto the grey foam.  The edges peeled off a bit a couple of times... so I cut a bit around the edge so the velcro doesn't "quite" go all the way out to the edge of the foam.  Then after the glue is set put another bead of the glue around the edge of the velcro on the foam.  Hasn't come off again since.
