Carpet Protector
« on: August 26, 2011, 02:29:22 PM »

Just out of couriousity, what brand of protector do you use and what do you charge?

I use fiber tec for my cheaper customers (7cents per sq.ft.), and I use teflon(10cents per sq.ft.) for the ones that want a little better.

I've tried selling protector, but no one here wants it, and if they do want it they want it included. Long way of saying I haven't used it enough to develop a favorite brand.

I made one small change in how I sell "carpet protector." I started calling is "stain guard." So maybe it's all in my head, but this little change seems to have made a difference. I'm now selling quite a bit more than before.

Carpet protector is easy to sell, we tell the customer that when we clean the carpet that much of the Scotch Guard will be removed and that it also wears off over time.  It should be put back on the carpet.  We tell them we use a protect that is better than Scotch Guard and if they have us use our protector we will give them a 1 year warranty on the carpet cleaning. Meaning if within one year they spill something on the carpet that they can't get off we will come at NO CHARGE and attempt to remove it.   We sell 75 to 80 percent of the time.

yes, curious here to what is better that scotchgard?
Just bought a case of scotchgard @ 40 bucks a gallon. Case shippin' was free and they had a sale on the stuff. Pushin' @.12 for commercial and @.15 for resi.    It was not moving until I started to sell it at the price I just stated.  Sold more in the last month then I have in last 2 years.  But my cleaning buddy seems to know just when to upsell  the stuff.    Seems like when I suggest it the custy does not want it, but when he suggests it they buy it.    Good guy to have around.
      Whats your prices?   :017:

Bud's prices are in line with ours. At .7 per square foot, what's the point? :)

I really like the waterbased protector from Hardball. Haven't found anything else that matches it in quality and price yet.

We use Hard Balls Solvent based Fabric Protector, safe for all fabrics, better bonding to the entire fiber not just the edges, doesn't re-wet the carpet, accelerates drying time, no freeze issues like water based protectors, cost per square foot should be about 2.5 to 2.8 cents a square foot.  We charge .15 cents a square foot.  I haven't found a better protector in IMO, and we have tested many.  We sell it for $45.00 a gallon.

Jim, I've been using Rhino Shield. Thoughts on that? Also, how does the toxicity of the Hard Ball product compare to Rhino Shield?

Mike at Hardball claims that his waterbased protector (Soil Blocker) is the greenest in the industry.

It runs about $30 a gallon, and each gallon covers 1500 sq feet.

It also dries faster than most protectors. Really good stuff.

Jim, do you carry Soil Blocker protector?

Eric, Rhino shield is a great product and certainly one of the best water based protectors on the market.  But comparing that to Hard Balls Fiber Protector is not comparing apples to apples, since one is water based and one is solvent based.  They both have their strong points.  As far as total protection I think the Fiber Protector is better.  I think it penetrates the fibers better, and causes the carpet to dry quicker.  There is also less chance of bleeding and no shrinkage issues, but always test.  Another big plus is that it has no freezing issues either so it can be shipped anytime of the year and you can even keep it in your vehicle without worry.  As far as toxicity is concerned, it is basically non existent.  The new solvents used today are not like the solvents of years ago.  They are so refined with different chemistry that there really is no issue.  The MSDS rating is 2 where Rhino is 1.  Again though I think Rhino is a really great product.

Phil yes we sell Soil Blocker at $32.00 a gallon.  And yes Soil Blocker is the greenest protector in the industry, every ingredient is certified green.

how are you selling it? what is your pitch. I am always honest and tell them to protect the rooms they use. tell them it is just like waxing the car works 50-75% of the time. also discount it if they do multiple rooms. incentives work like mad for me. example one room mrs smith is 15 but I will do all 6 for $75 giving you a room for free today. They hear free and perk up quick. Use sales tactics you have to show value in the deal and they will bite. Try giving them the price with protectant first telling them it is your professional opinion they do this. If they freak take it off you will be surprised how many will say yes just ask ken snow at hagopian.

Excuse me for sounding like Al Gore but, I thought any product that contains any type of Fluoropolymer's can NOT get green sealed. I realized on there site that they say they just cant afford to get it certified... but 3m can, and they have No seals. Even though they say that they are safer than 3m..(scotchgard). Infact I only know of 1 certified protectant and it doesn't contain fluro's and it is green sealed.

Charlie, you can certify Fluoropolymers, but you can't certify Fluorochemicals which are solvent based.  That being said I gave information from a flyer we received from Hardball months ago,  so I am not going to argue the point any further.  It is a great product and is as safe and probably safer than any protector out there.  I would not hesitate using either Hardball's chemicals or   VacAway's products.  The green label has been bastardized so bad I am not sure it really means or is worth anything anyway.  These certifying companies are all about money, enough said.

Have you considered Guardian Carpet Protector and Fortifier? With new mixing instructions you now mix 1to1 with water and each RTU covers 800s.f.
At 10 cents per foot that makes $160.00 per gallon of concentrate that costs$ 43.75 per gallon if purchased by the case and comes with FREE shipping.
I don`t charge less than 10 cents per foot unless I am covering a large area in the thousands of square feet.
With the new mixing instructions application and dry time are very good. One moderately paced application stroke with a 50% overlap. Grooming on most carpets is not needed.
