NuTech, Take this for what it's worth. Your posts really have me thinking about the challenges I face in starting and growing a business. I get the more month than money thing. (Five kids, so I'm paying child support as well, full time running my business and part time job to boot, and end often don't meet in the winter. Wife does not have a paying job.) Some days I feel like quitting and I can find lot's of reasons to do so when I feel that way. When things are going great, I find lots of reasons to keep going.

I think I've heard you say that the sole proprietors have trashed the market and the franchise folks have trashed the market. Is this a problem or an opportunity? Seems like the right person with the right attitude and skills is poised for profit. There are MANY dissatisfied customers in your market right now wanting and waiting for a better option. I'm wondering if there isn't something you can do differently in attitude and actions that will open doors, build trust with customers and build your business portfolio. I've heard it said, "Those who say it's impossible should get out of the way of those who will do it."

I see you looking at ebay items. Are more tools the answer? Partly, maybe, perhaps. However, this time of the year I look for every possible way to improve my business without spending a dime. During the warm season I may spend some money. This time of the year I focus on cutting expenses. When cutting expenses, nothing is sacred unless it's a quality of life issue more important than growing your business. For instance, this time of the year I still buy fishing bait, but we fish local ice rather than pulling my small boat all over the county. We check out repeat movies from the library rather than renting from the video store. I hand less cash to my kids and expect them to work more to get what they want. I lay off hired help and take care evening janitor work myself, with one of my kids helping as a paid job. Hate working nights, but hate more paying out when I can't afford it.

Not trying to pass judgment or be judgemental, just wanting you to find a way to be successful.

In my humble opinion what makes it worse is that in most franchise situations you are not only paying them on every job you do but dont you usually start up with a loan payment to them also? So in all reality you are paying quite a bit more then whatever percentage it is that they are taking. And if I understand those loans also they dont come with a great interest rate.
Have you......

Joined the Chamber of Commerce?Right Now the cost is out of reach. $370
Joined a networking group?I honestly dont know what one is
Gone door to door offering Building managers free demo's?Yes, 20 hours a week for almost two years. Got ROI to cover fuel. That may have changed since then. Its been a year since I decided not to. Will Get that going again, Its on my list.
Looked up the local free business links websites and listed your business?Yes, I am at the 300 range for seo.
Listed your Business on BING, Google Places, Yahoo live?Yes, I had google ban me for 3 months then they deleted my account entirely. OUCH! I do have Bing, and recently updated a really old Yahoo Live account last week.
Networked with realtors?Yes But those ties have seemed to fizzle out during market crash, On my list to renew those ties again.
Looked up government contracts and made bids? I have no idea on where to look. I used to be able to search L.E.D.S. "Law Enforcment Data System" Its an inside trick! Used to find alot of confidential realty jobs on there. and Government Inquiry and invitations to bid. It has been completely taken off the public grid.

Just some of my ideas.
I thank you.

I will be reading the info you posted davendana.

CACB, I often purchase things for resale. As I did buy a few tools, Mostly because the deal was too good to pass up. I need to add more services to make myself more appealing and sorta up to date with things.

I hear you on the "Why do I bother". I honestly sit there and wonder what I did so wrong to have to go through this stuff sometimes. I got yet another updated renewal of child support. It went up even more to $4822 a month. If I bundled every bill I had it is still about a tenth of that. And my Exwife makes $23 an hour full bennies union job.

google "networking groups" in your area.  BNI is a big one. A good networking group can be a huge boon to business.  A bad one can be a waste of money and time.
