bleach stains
« on: August 26, 2011, 02:19:40 PM »
A few weeks ago I powerwashed a house with bleach. I rinse the house off with soapy water to dilute the residual bleach, and because the chemical injection tip uses less pressure and is unlikely to force water under a window's weather stripping. Nonetheless, the screens are the type that have to be pulled inside to be removed, so when I took one out to get out on the roof for the window cleaning, a few drops got on the carpet, and there was enough bleach to leave a few discolored spots on the forest green rug.

bleach damage. I try not to ever say bleach stains, because then people think you can clean it out.  Bleach has to be neutralized, and then spots need to re re-dyed

As our friend from Bellingham has indicated, bleach damage is not staining!

A stain is the result of added pigment. What chlorine bleach does is to chemically modify the native pigmentation by adding an oxygen molecule, thereby altering the manner in which the original colouring reacts to light, most commonly resulting in a broader spectrum of light to be reflected. Whilst it is often possible to alter the chemistry of the staining agent (sometimes with a bleaching agent), in most instances the bleaching action is irreversible. Hence the need to re-stain (re-dye) the fibres.

Cheap trick we pulled in the 80's, colored permanent markers. And there is such a color spectrum nowadays, Sripto has about every color under the sun.  You can get a real dye kit from carpet supply places .
