Not sure what kind of OP Equipment to purchase.
« on: June 10, 2010, 03:32:02 PM »
Hi everyone,
I am a new guy in the business and I like the OP Systems.I'm looking for some help on determining which OP equipment would be the best to purchase. I started looking into the 17 inch commercial Breeze from carpet care system, the HOS Orbot, Orbiter 17 inch Definder, CX 17inch and the 17 inch Challenger and I'm not sure on which one is better than the other. Is there still a better OP system out there?

Thanks FloorGuy

How are you going to use the machine? Residential, Commercial, Hard Floor?

I plan on using this mainly for residential but I would also like to use it for commercial. I would like to use it on carpet, tile/grout, and to buff hardwood floors.

All depends on your budget, they all do the job, aka clean carpets.

So where are you from Floorguy?

Well I'm from Charleston, West Virginia, and all I'm trying to do is find the difference between the different OP devices.

I have 2 Defenders.  I chose those because of price and wheels on the floor.  Machines are easy to use, clean well and don't need gliders.

Floorguy,

You're 5 hours west of me.  If you were closer or ever in this area, I'll be happy to show or give any advice on OP.

Any machine that has wheels to the ground will not require glides as the wheels not only make it easier for the operator to clean and the weight of the pad driver is not all on the carpet, the wheels removes some of the tension, this is why some of us that have a machine with no wheels on the ground have to use glides.

If I were to get a new machine and price was not an issue, I'd get an Orbot, it stands out more than the other machines.  I've played with a Defender and CX17/20, they're great machines as well, like I said any machine will get the job done.

If price is a factor you might be able to buy one for half or a third used than a new Orbot or CCS.

Floor guy,
First we need to compare apples to apples.  I feel free floating handle machines are better suted for residential (more maneuverable)  In this catogory you have listed the CCS Breeze vs Challenger titian.  Both 17 inch machines.  The challenger will operate smother, and should be lighter , easier to carry. The CCS machine is heaver, not quite as smooth , BUT it will out clean any OP on the market. And cleaning will go faster.

The next category you have wheel on the ground machines. I feel these are best for commercial work, but you certainly can use it for residential ,  In this category you have Orbot, Defender< easy glide.  The easy glide is similar to the defender (but with the ccs brush driver it should clean a little better), but maybe not quite as smooth. I don't think you would see any cleaning difference between the Orbot vs Defender, the main difference is price, IMO

Next we have Commercial only machines. The ccs Brute , Orbot with spray borge, cx17/20.  These machine make short work of larger commercial jobs, but would be difficult to use in residential (with the exception of the Orbot if you take the sprayer off)

SO if you want mainly residential with light commercial, Look at the challenger titian vs the CCS breeze.

If you'll be doing more of a mix of residential/commercial , Look at the Defender , Easy glide or Orbot.  Note: these don't clean better than free flotation handle machines, the advantage is ease of use on larger jobs)

If your doing all commercial work look at the Brute, or CX, or Orbot with spray borge.

In almost every category listed above, the CCS machines offer more aggressive cleaning, while the others tend to be smoother running and a bit lighter.

As far as glides go, all machines above can be used with them or with out them, In residential I like to use a glide with both my challenger, and Defender, Because it's more gentle on the carpet. So whether or not a machine can be used with or without a glide shouldn't play a factor in your decision.

Any of the machines mentioned will do a good job though?

Yup.

Ps...get something to start off, at the end of the day they all clean carpets.

I have the Orbot with  Spray Borg. The Spray Borg never comes off. As far as maneuverability, the handle doesn't free float, but it can be easily raised and lowered. The unit can be operated with the handle almost straight up. And maneuvering with the wheels on the ground....I just pick em up and walk around the machine. Only occasionally have I run into maneuverability problems.

Downside of the Orbot. I load and unload mine solo from the back of my van. It's just heavy/light enough that I need but haven't committed to a ramp, especially with a full tank of solution on board it. Also kind of cumbersome. No really good place to grab hold with the handle folded. If the drive plate flips down on loading and you don't have the wheels in, I gotta start over. At the same time when traveling I have to either have it well packed in or the drive plate down. Otherwise it start tipping back and forth in the back, knocking thing around with its 85 pound weight.

With two people, not a problem loading/unloading.

I have 3 heavy duty bungee cords connected to my op, it stays on the side door connected to the small holes the van has to screw things in, I haven't used my ramp yet, even though I do carry it with me.  I know the Orbot w/ spraybord is heavier than my machine, maybe look for a ramp like mine, you will really like it.

I looked for a while for the right op machine for me.  Liked the CCS models a lot but went with the orbot mainly because it folded.  WHile I have nothing to compare it to I can safely say that Im really happy with it.  Used it this weekend for a tile job as well with the grout brush.

I own a Challenger with a 3/4 hp motor, Nice machine, BUT
if I had a chance to buy one right now, I'd be buying an Orbot.

For residential and light commercial I would lean toward the Defender.

Its not an overly priced machine and has wheels on the ground which really reduces fatigue.

Challenger has merits too and is one of the lower priced machines.

I liked the look and concept of the Orbot but haven't seen a lot of good reviews about the company support.

I am really having a hard time understanding WHY someone would want three speeds on their machine? Just turn the damn thing on and get the job done. Maybe having a slower speed for area rugs might be nice but I still don't think it is that big of a deal.

My biggest initial thoughts on the Trinity is the price? :o

I don't see that as a starter machine. You could buy 2 or 3 lesser priced machines for the price of the Trinity.
